Discovery Education Case Study

Client:

Discovery Education is an online service for elementary and middle school supporting science inquiry with content tied to state science standards. The service provides core science content through multiple learning modalities.

Who:

Discovery found that providing a hands-on component will support the adoption of their Online Science program for grades 3-5 and 6-8.

The Challenge:

Develop 40 hands-on, inquiry-based science labs aligned with state science standards for grades 3-5 and 5-8 . . . and complete the project in less than a month.

What We Did:

Our staff experts in science content, inquiry-based science, current trends in science education, state adoption processes, and standards interpretation worked cohesively to develop two customized prototypes, one for each grade cohort. Experience taught us to focus on the front-end planning, fleshing out concepts, documenting specifications, creating schedules, and mobilizing editorial teams. We knew the high-stakes nature preparing materials for adoption and worked closely with Discovery as one team to execute on the development of these highly engaging labs with a single, coordinated effort.

The Outcome

The finished product was adopted by the State of Oregon, and this program is now a leading online program under consideration by other states.
