Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is an established leader in developing and providing virtual K-12 education solutions to students all over Florida, the United States, and the world. FLVS was the country’s first statewide Internet-based public high schools. FLVS has a nationally recognized e-learning model and is the recipient of numerous awards Today, FLVS not only serves students in grades K-12, but also provides a variety of custom solutions for schools and districts to meet student needs.
After accepting our response to an RFP, Florida Virtual School contacted Words & Numbers when the state of Florida revised its Sunshine State Standards and asked us to develop three 508-compliant online middle school math courses aligned to the new state standards.
Driven by years of experience, we focused on the front-end planning process and sent a team of our experts to Florida for face-to-face meetings with FLVS staff. Considering the essential learning outcomes and timelines, we fleshed out concepts, documented specifications, and organized the instructional scope and sequence to ensure learning objectives were met.
Embracing the most innovative practices in e-learning, we took a sample lesson from each course and developed storyboards to demonstrate how the sequence of skills were presented in a balanced fashion, beginning with supporting skills and progressing to the most complex ones. We incorporated state-of-the-art instructional design principles to incorporate the balance of video, audio, text, and interactivity within each lesson and across all modules. We managed technology partners that allowed a full-service, U.S.-India hybrid solution that maximized value and minimized headaches in project management and communication.
During the development process, we conducted comprehensive training for our staff in ADA regulations to enable them to develop courses that are 508 compliant and accessible to students with disabilities.
The three courses were successfully launched, and as a result, we continue to be one of their lead content development partners for additional courses that span a variety of disciplines.
